Stop Dogs Chasing Cars
Some dogs have a tendency to chase after moving cars or motorcycles and a dog that likes to chase after things and people can become a serious problem, especially when it puts itself or others at risk.
If this is the case with your dog: You have to make sure that he is always kept on a leash whenever moving traffic is nearby. Failing to do so could lead to your dog being run over by a car or a driver might get startled and attempt to avoid your dog and bump another car or a pedestrian. This can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. If you own the dog, you'd be in deep trouble. You could be brought to court and fined and your dog could be put down.
Even a little furry puppy can wreck havoc when they start chasing anyone or anything that moves. How then, do you stop your dog from chasing?
Training your dog to respond differently to a basic instinct requires a lot of patience. But just like teaching your dog new tricks with a clicker or leash training a young pup, the overall approach is positive reinforcement in pre-conditioning. Or in the case of chasing, re-conditioning responses to a basic instinct would be more appropriate.
Another method that you might want to attempt to stop your dog from chasing cars is to have a friend drive slowly by your house while your dog is outside. When your dog starts running towards the friend’s car, have the friend throw a water balloon out the window aimed just in front of the dog. This should not injure the dog but just cause him to stop and realized that he might not want to run after a car unless he wants to get wet.
This process should be repeated daily for a few days, and you may even want to attempt it with different friends or at least different cars so the dog does not just associate the water balloons with that person or that car.
Some trainers don't encourage this method but if your dog poses a risk to passing vehicles this method could save your dog's life, the life of a motorist or even a pedestrian. This method is especially effective with dog's that don't like water. Remember that in order to stop dog chasing you will have to remain consistent with the training.
Another thing that you should do to prevent dog chasing is to not allow your dog to chase you. Again, allowing your dog to chase anything is reinforcing aggressive behavior and his natural prey drive. If you allow your dog to chase you, your dog will learn that he can chase other people as well, and guests might not enjoy a chasing game as much as you.
If your dog attempts to chase you, instead of playing along, you should turn your back on the dog and refuse to play. Once the dog has calmed down, praise him for stopping. You may also want to tell your dog to ‘sit’ when he attempts to chase you. Then praise him for obeying you. Both options praise the good behavior and help your dog know that the bad behavior is not going to be encouraged; hopefully this will make your dog stop chasing.
