Managing Human Capital
Have you ever wondered why some professional teams seem to win championships year after year? Believe it or not but one of major ingredient to winning is having the right coach (supervisor) teaching you all the fundamentals of being a champion. A coach (supervisor) is the same as a mentor who will assist you whenever you come to a cross road and don’t know which way to turn.
Managing human capital in an environment characterized by down-sizing, right-sizing, reengineering, technological innovation, and global competition is increasingly challenging for organizations. The need for good supervisors was never more urgent.
The three essential skills for supervisors, are problem-solving, customer focus and communication. “If they don’t have those top three strengths, you’re going to have to work very hard with them, or you’ll be putting them in a no-success situation.” New supervisor training has become extremely important.
Supervisor training involves motivation. Management development is another key element of the empowerment and development process. Attitude, incentives and goal-setting will lighten up any burdensome task, when the going gets tough the employees will need the motivation to work.
- Attitude - It is important that the supervisor is optimistic, especially in light of an arduous task. If the supervisor reflects an optimistic attitude, his workers will be easily influenced. A supervisor who utilizes delegation will provide positive outcomes for his workers. The components needed for high levels of satisfaction fit into only three categories: inspiring leadership, great facilities, and a sense of purpose for employees.
- Incentives - Rewards do not have to be tangible; pats on the back and encouraging words are just as enticing. When the atmosphere is uplifting and when authority is not threatening, workers are more inclined to conform to their surroundings. Supervisor training involves resource management. The supervisor must use the limited resources he has to make the project doable and complete. The structure of organizations is becoming more team oriented, resulting in the need to compensate individuals to some extent based upon their contributions to achieving team and organizational goals.
- Goal Setting - Making goals will help the supervisor's staff envision what they need to accomplish in order to be successful. When the supervisor paints a picture of what needs to be done, the goals are specific, and thus, easier to follow. In order for employees to be accountable and rewarded for performance it is necessary to develop individual and team performance objectives.
Front-line supervisors play a key role in business success. Supervisors are the company’s unsung heroes, and are the glue that holds it all together. They could not do it without the infrastructure of the organization, but the organization could not function without them either.
