Train or Mentor New Supervisors

iStock_000001417665XSmall[1] People want to feel as though they are contributing in a positive manner to their companies goals and future.  Handled correctly an employee gains a tremendous amount of pride knowing that their contribution to the organization is valued.  The majority of companies have job descriptions for their employees because they provide useful knowledge as far as duties and responsibilities are concerned.  However, job descriptions do not cover topics as to where a person fits on the org chart, or who this employee most interacts with within the organization.

A new research brief concludes that far too many supervisors in the workplace are not equipped to deal with employee health, productivity, absenteeism, disability, or employees returning after a long period of illness or being laid off.  New Supervisors have an especially hard time in these areas.

In Corporate America today, many companies have launched formal mentoring programs in which more experienced employees are paired with newer staff members.  The mentor and the mentee are given some outlines to follow and they are sent on their way.  The assumption that a close and bonding relationship will begin.  Experience shows however, that the Formal Structure of assigning a mentor to a student doesn't always work.

Research has shown that the most valuable and effective mentoring relationships happen spontaneously.....a certain chemistry occurs between two people and a friendship evolves.

One can see why companies think that assigning a mentor is a good thing as mentors can see obstacles before the student and they can steer them around them and make the road a little less bumpy.  A good mentor is part friend, part coach, counselor, and a teacher.  Good mentors are tough as well as supportive,  This sound strangely like what a good supervisor does.

To succeed in anything requires thinking more broadly, outside the box, and over the horizon.  A New Supervisor training program that is based on substandard training material is doomed to fail because it will not only have gaps in it and not be able to fully train or instruct the new supervisor, but it will also cause the new supervisor being trained to lose faith in the material that they should be relying on. It may also lead to them losing faith in the company itself and not taking the training or any instruction seriously.

With a fully developed and responsive new supervisor training program in place, a company is putting its best efforts forth in developing a workplace filled with supervisors who know what it takes to get their job done, know what it takes to make the product they produce or the service they provide better, and also know what it takes to make it easier for their co-workers to also perform at a high level.
