Supervision is like Golfing
Supervision is like 18 holes of golf. On the Front 9 you accumulate new knowledge and skills needed to do their jobs and on the Back 9 you provide the resources that create efficient and effective leadership..... On the golf course, players carry three types of clubs in their bag: Woods, Irons, and a Putter.
Before each shot, they select the type of club to use, based on the conditions and distance required for the next shot. Irons are used primarily for approach shots, the Putter is used on the green and Woods are used for distance shots.
Imagine a moment asking a PGA pro to play 18 holes with only Irons, and a Putter, or Woods and Irons? By restricting their tools, their golf score will suffer. Owners that recommend one strategy to their new supervisors are restricting their options, and just like the golfer performance will suffer too.
ModernManagers.com’s. New Supervisor Training Program is a map of the course, a way to get from here to there in a designated time with the fewest detours and hazards. Back 9 planning is a process, rather than a one time event. As situations change, you need a flexible strategy to see you through.
Without accountability, it’s like playing golf in the dark. Players don’t know if they hit the ball towards the pin and they don’t know if they got the ball in the hole, and, after awhile, nobody cares.
Training should no longer be seen as a discrete set of activities around a course or similar event. .I think lack of training and other performance interventions are often like the golfer who "just keeps playing" without taking the time for self-reflection.
Staying with the golf analogy, people apply various approaches, including training, to further the business, but in the end don't actually measure the effect of the specific approach, as long as they are still on the fairway, they keep on playing.
That is, stepping back and saying, "Even though I'm still on the fairway, what do I have to do to make more progress, i.e., get to the pin in fewer strokes.
Is it the course? Is it the weather? Is it my swing? Is it my equipment? Is it my mental game? Maybe it's time to give some Golf Lessons!
